It goes without saying that the internet has revolutionized shopping. Amazon, eBay, Etsy — any and every product you can imagine is at your fingertips. Though the convenience and accessibility of online shopping is undeniable, there is something missing: service and specialized attention. You can (and in my opinion should) purchase a lot of products online, but one thing you should never purchase online is medical equipment. You should always use a local medical supply store. This anecdote explains why, effectively:
I recently spoke with a gentleman that had purchased a motorized lift chair off of Amazon. It was delivered promptly, and after some help from his son, the chair was assembled and setup in his living room. The chair wasn’t the best quality, but seemed to function just fine. After two weeks of use, things went sideways (figuratively and literally). One night, after a nap, the man attempted to return to the seated position so he could exit the chair and use the restroom. He pressed the button on the remote but nothing happened. He was stuck in the laying-down position. To make things worse, his son was out of town, and his wife wasn’t strong enough to help him out of the chair. Now beginning to panic, he instructed his wife to get the owner’s manual so they could call the manufacturer for help. After waiting on the phone for an hour, they finally were able to speak with a real person. Unfortunately, the manufacturer was based out of state, and they had no technicians within a few hundred miles of the home. The customer support rep suggested that they call 911.
Eventually, 911 was called and the man was rescued from the chair. Needless to say, he never used it again.
A local medical supply store should be more than a storefront. It should be more than a furniture store, retail shop or supply vendor. A local medical supply store should be there to offer guidance, support, and specialized attention to their patients. Had this man purchased a chair from Bello Medical Supply, the story would have ended much differently. He could have called us, morning noon or night. For emergency situations, we are always open and on call. A specialized and trained technician would have gone to his house that night with the proper supplies and equipment to fix the chair on the spot.
Buy whatever you want online — EXCEPT MEDICAL EQUIPMENT.
The moral of the story is, buy whatever you want online — toys, toiletries, gifts, clothes, snacks, electronics, etc. But not the things that really matter. Purchase medical equipment from someone who cares about your health and safety as much as you do. Sleep soundly knowing if you ever need help, a local, certified technician will be there to assist.
